Gifts for 1–2 year olds can accompany an exciting stage when toddlers are becoming more independent and discovering new ways to play every day. Gifts for grasping, building and learning through play

Between 1 and 2 years old, toddlers discover new ways to grasp, sort, stack and combine objects. Motor Skills Toys encourage hands-on play through stacking, fitting and experimenting, while first Building Blocks introduce open-ended construction and give little builders the freedom to create and start again.

Montessori Toys also offer thoughtful gift ideas centred around hands-on discovery, experimentation and growing independence. As children develop, Puzzles & Board Games can introduce simple matching, observation and problem-solving activities, always with a game suited to the child's age and abilities.

Gifts for movement, balance and first rides

Movement becomes an increasingly important part of play between 12 and 24 months. Ride-on Toys allow toddlers to discover independent riding by pushing against the ground with their feet, while Rocking Horses introduce a different type of movement and balance through play.

For children who love climbing, stepping and experimenting with their whole body, Active Play & Motor Skills offers more ways to explore gross motor skills and balance. Depending on age, height and the individual model, Balance Bikes, Bikes & Scooters can also introduce new adventures on wheels.

First pretend play toys for copying everyday life

During the second year, many toddlers begin to copy familiar actions and situations they see around them. Pretend Play Toys encourage this natural curiosity, allowing children to imitate adults, explore different roles and gradually invent their own simple stories.

Play Kitchens, Tea Sets & Shops invite little ones to prepare meals, serve food and play shop, while Dolls & Accessories encourage caring play and familiar everyday routines.

Toy Cars are another accessible way to begin creating simple stories through play. As children's imagination develops, Garages & Tracks can expand these little vehicle worlds and introduce even more possibilities.

Music and creative activities for curious toddlers

Musical Toys allow toddlers to discover sounds and rhythms by creating them through their own movements. Shaking, tapping and playing age-appropriate instruments turns simple actions into playful musical experiences.

First Drawing, Colouring & Painting activities can also introduce toddlers to colours and mark-making when the materials are specifically designed for their age. Kids Activity Tables provide a child-sized space for drawing, building, manipulating objects and exploring different activities.

Developmental toys beyond baby's first birthday

Baby Development Toys can continue to offer plenty of interest after the first birthday. Baby Toys and Motor Skills Toys may introduce new challenges as toddlers become increasingly confident in the way they grasp, stack, move and experiment with objects.

This collection naturally follows our Newborn & Baby Gifts – 0–12 Months. As rattles, play mats and early sensory experiences gradually make way for new interests, toddlers discover more opportunities for movement, construction, independent exploration and pretend play.

Gift ideas that encourage growing independence

Between 1 and 2 years old, toddlers often become increasingly interested in trying things for themselves. Montessori Toys offer hands-on activities that encourage independent exploration, while Learning Towers can allow children to participate more closely in suitable everyday activities alongside adults.

Montessori Beds & Floor Beds can also support a more accessible environment in the child's bedroom. For families looking for a larger and longer-lasting present rather than a traditional toy, children's furniture can provide another thoughtful gift idea.
